The drive continued until we parked outside a glass structured building. Paul adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose.

“We’re here. Our first stop,” he said as he pushed the door open and stepped out. Cassie and I followed behind, looking at each other as we looked at the building. I could pick the amazement from Cassie’s face and used her joy to keep me steady.

Paul climbed the short stairs out front, and the automatic glass doors opened up to him as he stepped inside. Cassie kept my hand as we followed and kept her voice low. “Don’t let that asshole get in your head. He could be testing you or something. Just be your strong, determined self.”

We entered the store, and Cassie let out a low gasp. It was beautiful, way too beautiful to be a store. Of course, as we took in the manicured plants, water features, and marble, people were looking at us too. Everyone was in the highest fashions but looked at Cassie and me with confusion, not judgement. That was progress, right? Proof that not everyone was going to immediately look down their noses at me.

“Well ... we should catch up,” I mumbled, leading Cassie further ahead.

I noticed Paul and headed in that direction until I noticed he was deep in conversation with an older woman and a large man. Though the man’s back was turned, it didn’t take me long to realize it was Jackson. My heart fluttered in my chest, and I could feel a weak smile creeping on my lips. Just then, his gaze went to me and held.

Jackson said something to the woman, and then he walked towards me, only glancing at Paul for a brief second – his gaze focused on me and only me. There was no disappointment in my looks, no sign he was bothered. Instead, it was like he was trying to memorize me exactly as I was.

Cassie tugged on my arm. “Holy shit.”

“I know,” I breathed as he approached, looking like he was in some kind of movie – his perfection was staggering.

“Lily,” he greeted.

“I didn’t know you’d be here,” I said just as he wrapped his arm around the small of my waist and pulled me in close.

He placed a gentle kiss on my cheek before drawing back, his hand still on my hip. My eyes darted around the store, and I saw that a few people saw the interaction, causing a blush to warm my cheeks.

“I wanted to see you,” he said, glancing over my shoulder at Cassie.

“This is my best friend, Cassie. The one I told you about,” I said.

“Of course. Pleased to meet you.” He inclined his head.

“Oh, my God, it’s an honor. I legit love your products!” she gushed; her face flushed.

Jackson shook her hand. “Thank you.”

He turned to me. “I hope you enjoyed the drive,” he said, glancing at Paul, who was talking to the woman Jackson spoke to earlier. “And you finally met Paul.”

“Yea-”

“Paul’s an asshole,” Cassie mumbled from beside me.
